The need for improved and more reliable internal control necessitates professionals who can effectively design, assess, use, and monitor the functioning of internal control. Certification is a way to define the Common Body of Knowledge for the practice of organizational control, and evaluate an individual’s ability to apply that knowledge to practice.
ICI’s Internal Control Certifications
CICS OR CICP CERTIFICATION PROCESS IS AS EASY AS 1-2-3
STEP 1
Certification demonstrates that you have the skills businesses are looking for. Once you’ve determined you meet the education and/or work experience requirements for the certification you’re interested in (see below), begin the certification process by paying the appropriate fee online.

Once the fee is paid, you can download the Excel certification application document. Just complete the required fields and the one-click Code of Conduct Affirmation statement contained in the application. Email it to ICI using the ICI email address contained within the application document.

STEP 3
Once you have completed and submitted the Excel certification application document, an examination password will be provided by St. Petersburg College. You will have 3 months to complete the examination online. A certificate will be issued to you upon successfully passing the examination.

CICS Certificate
The CICS designation is a personal certification of competence that is granted to individuals who meet the requirements of the certification program. Individuals must demonstrate an understanding and comprehension of the Internal Control Common Body of Knowledge (CBOK).
The requirements for CICS certification:
- 3 years internal control work experience, AND
- College bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in an acceptable field, OR
- 5 years internal control work experience
CICP Certificate
The CICP designation is a senior-level, highly skilled internal control professional certification. Individuals qualifying for this designation must satisfy and substantiate the extensive skills and knowledge requirements established by the ICI Certifications Board.
The requirements to qualify for CICP certification are:
- CICS certification plus a total of 8 years internal control work experience; OR
- 12 years internal control design and/or assessment experience or equivalent; OR
- a 4-year college degree and eight years internal control work experience; OR
- a masters degree and 7 years internal control work experience; OR
- a doctorate degree and 4 years work experience; AND,
- can demonstrate proficiency in internal control concepts plus a minimum of 5 of the other 7 internal control job dimensions; AND,
- have a testimonial letter submitted from a contemporary who can attest to your experience
